Poland's youth underground, 1944–1956: books by region

In brief

• According to an internal Ministry of the Interior report, 491 clandestine youth organisations with about 6,340 members were uncovered after the war¹.
• Youth organisations in, among others, Pomerania, the Rzeszów region, the Lublin region, Lesser Poland, Upper Silesia and the Łódź region have their own books^2,3,4,5,6,7.
• Two books in the list come from today's Świętokrzyskie province: one on the Pińczów area and one on the Młode Wojsko Polskie (Young Polish Army) organisation from Staszów^8,9.
• Elwira J. Kryńska, whose findings we cite in our articles on the underground, edited the volume „Terror i konspiracja” (2004)¹⁰.

This list covers books that the National Library of Poland catalogue describes with the subject heading “Organizacje młodzieżowe” (youth organisations) and that concern the underground of 1944–1956. We chose studies of different regions of Poland, editions of documents and testimonies, and two general works. They are ordered by year of publication. The descriptions give the title, publisher, length and geographic headings according to the National Library catalogue; we do not review the books. All are in Polish. 1. Józef Fajkowski and Tadeusz Polak, „Z dziejów konspiracyjnego harcerstwa polskiego 1944–1956” (1993)

The title means From the history of the underground Polish Scouts, 1944–1956; subtitle: „(nieznane karty)” (unknown pages). Published by Fundacja Kultury Polskiej (Warsaw 1993, 80 pages)¹¹.

2. „Młodzieżowe organizacje ruchu oporu w województwie pomorskim (bydgoskim) w latach 1945–1956” (1993)

Youth resistance organisations in the Pomeranian (Bydgoszcz) province, 1945–1956: a collective work edited by Włodzimierz Jastrzębski, published by the “Pokolenia Pomorza” association (Bydgoszcz 1993, 137 pages)².

3. „Wolna młodzież!” (1995)

Full title: „Wolna młodzież! Dokumenty i relacje z dziejów antykomunistycznego ruchu oporu 1949–1953” (Free youth! Documents and testimonies from the anti-communist resistance, 1949–1953), collected and edited by Andrzej W. Gała. Published by the Częstochowa Museum (1995, 211 pages). The National Library catalogue describes it as a source edition¹².

4. Eugeniusz Bachta, „Młodzieżowe konspiracyjne organizacje niepodległościowe w województwie rzeszowskim w latach 1944–1956” (1997)

Underground youth independence organisations in the Rzeszów province, 1944–1956. Published by the Learned Society in Przemyśl (1997, 231 pages, with facsimiles and photographs); geographic heading: the Rzeszów area³.

5. „Gniazdo zapaleńców” (2004)

Full title: „Gniazdo zapaleńców: materiały i opracowania dotyczące konspiracyjnej działalności harcersko-niepodległościowej na Ziemi Pińczowskiej w latach 1939–1951” (A nest of enthusiasts: materials and studies on underground Scout and independence activity in the Pińczów area, 1939–1951), collected, edited and annotated by Feliks Białkiewicz and Zbigniew Sobczyk. The National Library holds the third edition (Warsaw 2004, 741 columns, 22 × 31 cm format)⁸.

6. „Terror i konspiracja” (2004)

Full title: „Terror i konspiracja: młodzież wobec indoktrynacji komunistycznej 1945–1956” (Terror and conspiracy: young people and communist indoctrination, 1945–1956), edited by Elwira Jolanta Kryńska. Published by Trans Humana in Białystok (2004, 95 pages, with facsimiles and photographs)¹⁰.

7. Jacek Witold Wołoszyn, „Chronić i kontrolować” (2007)

Full title: „Chronić i kontrolować: UB wobec środowisk i organizacji konspiracyjnych młodzieży na Lubelszczyźnie (1944–1956)” (To protect and to control: the security service and youth underground groups in the Lublin region, 1944–1956).
